Volpone is generally regarded as Ben Jonson's masterpiece, and it is certainly a great play. The present book is intended as a critical study of this most interesting, almost engrossing play, and is designed to meet the examina- tion needs of university students. All aspects of the play have been dealt with, and an effort has been made to stimulate the student's interest in it and to acquaint him with different critical approaches to it. Important questions with answer have been provided as a further aid to the student. The original spelling has been retained in the text of the play and, as the student is likely to find it difficult to understand the meanings, a complete paraphrase has also been supplied.
I must repeat here what I have said before about each of my books: "No originality is claimed for this work. It is not a research paper. The object was to select and co-ordinate critical material and to present it, with suitable illustra- tions from the text, in an easily intelligible and assimilable form."
