The foundations of climatology lie in the realms of physics, mathematical statistics, and synoptic meteorology. Many excellent textbooks deal with these subjects, others with the basic facts of climate, but no textbook covers all these fields in a manner both easy to understand and sufficiently rigorous for the serious student. Such a textbook I have endeavoured to provide, on the basis of nineteen years' experience in teaching climatology and meteorology to a wide variety of students.
Foundations of Climatology is intended as a text, both for students in university geography departments where climatology is taken seriously as a subject in its own right, and for teachers of physics, mathematics, and geography who wish to interest their pupils in atmospheric science. I also hope that the book will prove useful in the training of new entrants, with only modest mathematical backgrounds, to the assistant, forecaster, and climatologist grades of state meteorological services, and that it will aid physical and biological scientists, medical and public health specialists, engineers, architects, planners, and others who wish to apply climatic information to their own fields in a scientific manner. I have written it purely from the view point of classical physics. Other climatologies are, of course, possible: written, for example, from the biological, human, economic, or historical standpoints; but the physical approach is the one most neglected in geographical literature, the one, in my experience, most likely to be difficult for the students, and the one most likely to advance climatology, both as a science and as a service to mankind.
