Narayan’s second novel, The Bachelor of Arts forms a part of the trilogy that began with Swami and Friends and culminated in The English Teacher. Set in Malgudi, this novel is about Chandran, who completes his B.A. in History. Initially he plans to go to England for further studies, but he is infatuated with Malathi and coerces his parents to seek the alliance. When it fails, he flees away from home and becomes a sanyasi. Ultimately what happens to him brings us to the end of the story. The present critical study examines and analyses the narrative from the point of view of university examinations. It provides a comprehensive summary of the novel, its background and the critical problems associated with it.
