Herbert Hewitt Stroup SOCIAL WORK : AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FIELD SECOND EDITION This second edition of Social Work has been occasioned by two circumstances : changes in the field which have made a good deal of material in the first edition out of date ; and the generous reception accorded the first edition by teachers and students all over the world. The basic plan of the book has not been changed, even though the text has been completely revised–indeed, almost completely rewritten. The primary intent is to provide a readable, comprehensive survey of social work and its functions. Since the book is designed as a basic text for the introductory course, emphasis is on what may be called the "structure" of social work. This does not mean that "process" is neglected, but merely that the treatment of process has been restricted to what seems appropriate for the beginning course. Group work and community welfare organization have been discussed at length, in the conviction that social work includes three fundamental divisions : casework, group work, and community welfare organization. Many persons mistakenly tend to identify social work with social casework exclusively; this book should help correct that idea. To make it easier for the beginning student to become acquainted with the nature of social work and its functions, the special terminology of the professional worker has been translated, wherever possible, into non-technical language.
