Ifor Evan’s well-known Short History of English Literature, covers the whole of English Drama from the origins to the present day. Apart from his reputation as an historian of literature, Dr. B. Ifor Evans has many active contacts with the theatre. He had been a Vice-Chairman of the Arts Council of Great Britain of whose Drama Panel he was once Chairman. He has served on the Governing Body of Old Vic and of Sadler’s Wells. This first Library Edition has been thoroughly revised. Dr. B. Ifor Evans has marshalled a great array of facts into a pattern of history but, as Punch wrote, ‘the usefulness and attractiveness is doubled by the fact that he sees his subject through the theatre, not as is more usual with professors of literature in terms of the study’.
