A Fine Balance covers the nine-year period (1975-84) – from the imposition of a State of Internal Emergency in the country to the Prime Minister’s assassination and the mayhem that followed. It is a severe indictment of her programmes and policies which, according to the author, did more harm than good to our political and social fabric. The present critical study examines and analyses the novel against this backdrop. At the end a number of critical and textual problems have been attempted from the examination point of view for our university students.
