AMITAV GHOSH: SEA OF POPPIES

The first volume of Amitav Ghosh's Ibis trilogy, Sea of Poppies initiates the tumultuous journey of a motley array of sailors and stowaways, coolies and convicts, across the Indian Ocean to the Mauritius Islands. The sweep of this historical adventure spans the hush poppy fields by the Ganga, the rolling high seas, and the exotic backstreets of canton in china at the time of the Opium wars. But it is the panorama of characters, whose diaspora encapsulates the vexed colonial history of the East itself, which makes Sea of Poppies breathtakingly alive. This critical study explores and analyses the novel's various facets from the points of view of our university students. At the end some prominent critical and textual problems are tackled to cater to examination requirements.
