The Wife of Bath’s Prologue and Tale is probably the most entertaining and engaging episode in The Canterbury Tales the most famous and critically acclaimed work of Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1340-1400). Having brought five husbands to the “church-door” apart from several dalliances in her youth, the apthy named Wife of Bath (Alisoun) shares her experiences of marital life and its essential lesson of women securing “maistrie” in marriage with the other pilgrims on way to the shrine at Canterbury.
This critical study, in addition to providing the original Middle English text, gives a modern rendering of the Prologue and the Tale along With a paraphrase, summary and analysis. This is followed by a number of critical and textual problem (with answers) for the benefit of our university students.
