This issue whether Philip Larkin was a major-minor or minor-major poet in post-war Britain is still being debated. But what comes across in his poetry is his "total honesty" in putting across his personal experiences, his disappointments and frustrations which could be easily identified with those of his readers. His outlook on life is bleak, gloomy and pessimistic, at times even cynical but he has a peculiar "quality of insight" which is evident in his best work and this makes him accessible to us.
The present critical study of the poet seeks to interpret and analyse Larkin's select poems in an effort to unravel his persona and his work. Substantive critical problems arising therefrom have been tackled at the end for the benefit of students in our universities.
