Oliver Goldsmith tried his hand at every genre of writing and has left behind The Traveller and
The Deserted Village (Poems); The Vicar of Wakefield
(a novel); and She Stoops to Conquer (a fast-paced comedy). And all his works are popular to this day.
The Vicar of Wakefield portrays the simple life of country folk in eighteenth-century England through the character of the narrator-protagonist, Dr. Primrose – an ideal priest, an ideal husband and an ideal father. The present critical study tackles various textual and critical problems associated with the novel for the benefit of students in our universities and abroad.
