Thomas Gray was a precursor of the early nineteenth century Romanticism in English poetry. Composing verse in the transitional period between Classicism and Romanticism, Gray is chiefly known as the author of Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. The present critical study deals with this elegy as well as other select poems from Gray’s scanty output like The Progress of Poesy, Hymn to Adversity, The Bard, On a Distant Prospect of Eton College and Ode on the Death of a Favourite Cat to meet the requirements of students in our universities. Originally prepared by Dr. Raghukul Tilak, it has been thoroughly revised, edited and updated by Prof. Shakti Batra.
