Matthew Arnold earned fame both as a critic and a poet. His poetic output is however, scanty as compared to his work as a critic and an essayist. His poems like The Scholar-Gipsy, Dover Beach, Thyrsis and A Summer Night reveal Arnold’s scholarship and craftsmanship He was truly a child of his age, yet he defied its philitinism and Mammon-worship. This present critical study, originally prepared by Dr. Raghukul Tilak, has been thoroughly revised, edited and updated by Prof. Shakti Batra.
