Raja Rao
KANTHAPURA
he finest novel to come out of India in
recent years. ' - E.M., Forster
Raja Rao’s novel Kanthapura (1938) is the first major Indian novel in English.
‘‘Kanthapura’’ is an enchanting story of how the Independence movement becomes a tangible reality in a tiny and secluded village in South India. It is the story of young Moorti, stormy and idealistic, and his fight against conservative forces.
The novel has the flavour of an epic as it emerges through the eyes of a delightful old woman who comments with wisdom and humour, on the variety and complexity of village life.
Santha Rama Rao in her review of the novel in New York Times Book Review has rightly said, ‘‘It has all the content of an ancient Indian classic, combined with a sharp, satirical wit and a clear understanding of the present.
‘‘Raja Rao is perhaps the most brilliant and certainly the most interesting writer of modern India.’’
