Thomas Hardy : Jude the Obscure Dr. Raghukul Tilak Jude the obscure is the story of a young man with high intellectual aspirations who fails to satisfy them owing to the vagaries of chance and circumstance. The publication of this novel led to a storm of hostile criticism, and it was condemned as being immoral. It was nicknamed as Jude the obscene and copies of it were burnt in large numbers. Thomas Hardy bade good-bye to novel-writing after this. This critical study, originally prepared by Dr. Raghukul Tilak, has been revised, edited and brought up to date by Prof. Shakti Batra.
