Johan August Strindberg (1849-1912) is now seen as a pioneer of twentieth-century theatre and one of the world’s great dramatists. During his lifetime, his obssessional treatment of insanity, sexual domination and the psychological warfare between the sexes provoked extreme reactions. Miss Julie is Strindberg’ s masterpiece, written at the height of his powers as a dramatist in 1888, It treats sexuality and human struggle with a frank realism previously unknown in the theatre, and presents, with startling modernity, the conflict between sexual passion and social position. His other plays include Master Olat (1881), The Father (1887), Creditors (1888) , The Stronger (1888-89), To Damascus Parts l and II (1898), The Dance of Death Parts I & II (1890), A Dream Play (1901) and The Ghost Sonata (1907).................................................
