NAGA-MANDALA The most imaginative and well-crafted play of Girish Karnad, Naga-Mandala is based on two different Kannada folk tales. It explores the nature of story-telling and the nature of desire, and their interweaving relationship. It is the story of a woman who is visited by a cobra at night when her husband is spending time with his mistress. What it stands for is the woman’s right to make her choice and is open to a variety of interpretations. The present critical study tries to explore the several layers of Karnad’s narrative to bring it closer to students in our universities. The text is analysed and examined as well as the various critical problems arising therefrom are tackled from the examination point of view.
