SIR WALTER SCOTT: THE HEART OF MIDLOTHIAN

The Heart of Midlothian is, by general consent, Scott’s masteriece in the realm of prose fiction, and it is decidedly one of the best historical novels in the English language. Apart from having a gripping plot, this novel covers a wide spectrum of social life, its characters ranging from the dregs of the criminal world to Queen Caroline herself. But, of course, the real greatness of the novel lies in its portrayal of the heroine, who is one of the most remarkable women in English fiction. Unforgettable, indeed, is Jeanie Deans, with her extraordinarily strong character, her integrity, her moral uprightness, and her spirit of self sacrifice. The other characters, too, have been vividly and convincingly portrayed, notably David Deans. It is a moving novel, which hovers on the brink of tragedy but which provides also plenty of comic relief.
