The Poetics is a seminal work, teeming with ideas which in course of time became established as starting-points for endless literary debate and discussion. As Aristotle formulated his views on the basis of only the existing poetic and dramatic works, many of his ideas have become out-of-date, or can be accepted with a good deal of modification and amendment. Yet the Poetics is an amazing treatise in so far as its inner vitality remains undiminished. As a work of literary criticism, the Poetics is both wide-ranging and profound; and even today every discussion of the nature of poetry must begin with Aristotle’s pronouncement that poetry is a form of imitation, and every discussion of tragedy must likewise begin with Aristotle’s definition of it.
