HISTORY OF GREEK PHILOSOPHY: THALES TO DEMOCRITUS

They are number of books on History of Greek Philosophy. However, most of these books prove too learned, too technical, or too bloodless, for the use and pleasure of a general reader. This book on the other hand, attempts to provide untechnical and vivid material on the subject to supplement the teacher's lectures and arouse the understanding and the interest of his pupil. The author is guided by the conviction that philosophy is not the impossibly abstract, abstruse, cold and difficult thing of the popular imagination but essentially something warm, clinging to everyday life, highly colored, melodramatic and naturally provocative and engrossing. The volume is based upon other histories and relies entiely upon the interpretation of them given by such historians as Zeller, Gomperz and Professor Burnet. Where divergencies of opinion and interpretation exists, they have been noted but no sides have been taken. Two bibliographies have been appended dealing with Greek Religion and Early Greek Philosophy, as well as a chronological table, which may be useful for framing philosophical, with their setting of historical, events.
