Sakharam Binder is probably Tendulkar’s most intensely naturalistic play. Through the central character of sakharam, a book- binder, Tendulkar explores the manifestation of lust and violence in a human being. He also unveils the feelings of Laxmi and Champa without any moralizing or judgement to demonstrate the basic and essential complexity of human nature, which neither black or white but varying shades of grey. In Sakharam Binder the issue is sexual power. When that power is threatened, the protagonist is confused and lashes out viciously, taking a life. Sakharam is a remarkable creation, admittedly based on someone Tendulkar once heard about.
