On the surface of it, Tara is a story about conjoined twins : Tara and Chandan who are surgically separated and yet remain entwined. Chandan won't go to University if Tara does not do the same, and Tara has no friends to speak of except for her twin Chandan. As the story unravels, however, we find that the play is not so much about people and personalities. We are introduced to various other characters, some of whom actually make an appearance on stage (the parents – Bharati and Patel, the next door neighbour – Roopa and the wonder doctor, Doctor Thakkar), and others who are revealed through memories (the grandfather) and one-sided conversations (Prema). Regardless, the personality of each character (including that of Chandan and Tara) is revealed in the context of the “conjoined-endness” of the twins. That is the frame of reference, the axis around which the entire spirit revolves.
