Ever since its publication, Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels has been perennial favourite. It was not written to woo and entertain. It was indictment, and it was most popular among those who were indicted – that is politicians, scientists, philosophers, and Englishmen in general. Swift was roasting mankind and they were eager for the banquet. Yet the Travels appeals to the child in all of us for its novelty and adventure. The artistry of the work readily evokes in us what Coleridge called ‘‘a willing suspension of disbelief’’.
